Last night I got to go to “Magick, Mayhem, and Little Rubber Monsters,” a double-feature put on by the podcast Movie Dumpster at the Colonial Theater. Both films were presented on 35mm, and let me tell you, it was a treat.
I have lots of thoughts on both films, but for now, the thing that stuck out to me most was the fact that GHOULIES, of all movies, had some of the best researched ceremonial magic scenes I’ve ever seen on television. As someone with a graduate degree in religion and some time spent studying western ritual traditions, I was really impressed. They really did their homework!
Both features also had great practical effects. In fact, the stop-motion effects in The Gate are among some of the most impressive I’ve ever seen… an absolutely incredible experience to see that on the big screen. We need more (or, really, ANY) rubber monsters and stop-motion effects these days!
I may try to write something up a bit lengthier over at Cinepunx about this double feature, but for now, I can heartily recommend both features to folks who haven’t already seen them.
